YouVisit offers college campus tours through Oculus Rift
And here you thought the Oculus Rift could only be used for gaming, a new startup called YouVisit is now offering the technology to people looking to get into a college or University, to explore the campus without actually paying to go visit.
The technology is still in the alpha stages, but YouVisit are keen to make this a viable option for people wanting to attend college in the near future. The team still claims it would be ideal for the student to go to the campus themselves, but this is an easier solution.
YouVisit’s app will track users eye movement to see where they are looking on the map, showing them different spots on the campus. Users have a “fly” view on top of the campus, it is like a first person view of Google Maps “Street View”, but YouVisit wants it to be more.
In the future, once they get more footage and the Oculus technology gets more advanced, they would like it to be a full simulation of the campus tour, inside and out, allowing the student to check out all facilities both indoors and outdoors.
This sort of experience is what we see as the future of virtual reality, when developers are capable of creating places where users can simply walk around, without bumping into loading screens or button presses.
The Oculus Rift is still very rare and most people do not have the money or the patience to grab the VR headset. Even though it is $350, the waiting list for the headset is around six months to a year, already people are paying thousands to get a hold of one.
Once the Oculus Rift becomes more popular and easy to come by, perhaps YouVisit will launch an app on the digital store. This would allow users to go into a campus while at home, instead of going to conventions where YouVisit will hold their own Oculus tours.
