Put Facebook Wall on your Actual Wall with the Help of Oculus Rift

Oculus VR is an American virtual reality technology company that was recently acquired by Facebook in March, 2014. Although the consumer version of the Rift is not out yet, the VR head mounted display has already caused a great amount of excitement in the gaming world as well as in the other fields.

Always offering surprises, Oculus VR has now introduced augmented reality. Augmented reality is a type of VR that projects a computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data on a user’s view of the real world in real time.

According to the latest news, now you can have your Facebook wall on your actual wall with the help of augmented reality and depth-sensing cameras such as Microsoft’s Kinect. Researchers Renato F. Salas-Moreno, Ben Glocker, Paul H. J. Kelly and Andrew J. Davison presented their invention, Dense Planar SLAM, at the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality held in Munich, Germany. Dense Planar SLAM features a system that augments real-world object and scenes in real time in great details. They used an amalgamation of several sensor arrays including an ASUS Xtion depth and motion sensor and an Oculus Rift DK1 development kit that allow the researchers to depict flat surfaces within a space without the need of high level of processing power. The software projects a translucent immersive environment where you can see the computer generated data in your field of view along with other sensory input, like audio, coinciding with it.

Not long ago, Mark Zuckerberg commented on AR, ‘After games, we’re going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face — just by putting on goggles in your home. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. By working with developers and partners across the industry, together we can build many more. One day, we believe this kind of immersive, augmented reality will become a part of daily life for billions of people.’
