Crescent Bay

Fans of the Oculus Rift products have been anxiously awaiting glimpses of the new prototype which has been christened ‘Crescent Bay’ by the developers. It was first revealed to the main consumer market in September, 2014.

Crescent Bay is a head mounted display whose first look was launched at the Oculus connect developer conference earlier this year. Everyone interested in virtual reality gaming has been waiting with bated breath for Oculus Rift to launch their product for consumers soon. Whether the product is being launched soon or not is unclear but the developer of Oculus Rift has mentioned that with the latest model Crescent Bay, they are very close to finalizing the finished product which will then be launched for consumer use. Crescent Bay has also been shown at the latest Web Summit that took place in Dublin, Ireland  last week.

The Oculus Rift development team has been fielding many questions about the final release of the product but have yet to confirm when that date will be. Some say that they have been taking this long because the headset can be injurious to health; it has been known to cause nausea, motion sickness, headaches and dizzy spells in beta users of the demo version. Testers are asked to sign a health and safety form before attempting to use any product of Oculus Rift.

So far, it seems that the finished version of Oculus Rift’s headset is nowhere to be seen on the market in the foreseeable future. For that reason, it may be that the developing team continues to showcase Crescent Bay at most events and conferences until the finalized product is completed. Crescent Bay differs from the previous headset in that it has been developed with a higher resolution OLED display with complete 360° positional tracking enabled for the player’s gaming experience along with fully integrated audio. Crescent Bay has also been set with a higher refresh rate to counter the motion sickness often felt by beta testers. Apparently, this function will dramatically decrease the ill effects of using the Oculus Rift headset.

Some differences have also been added to the exterior of the prototype. There are now white dots all over the front of the device and on the back of the headband. Two very small headphones have also been attached to the headset, which hang down both sides for easy access and to prevent them getting lost. All these new features are serving to enhance the virtual reality gaming experience to an extent where it feels like you’re playing in the real world. Further updates about Crescent Bay and any further prototypes will be brought to you as soon as possible by Virtual Reality Times.
