28 Days with OR

A man by the name of Mark Farid has taken up the challenge to wear the Oculus Rift headset and live through someone else’s eyes and ears for 28 days straight!

The main goal of this experiment is to explore the entire concept of identity within human beings. Mark is an artist by profession and as such has decided to combine the world of virtual reality to test a few abstract concepts. For the stipulated 28 days, he has proposed that he will live in the same art gallery but will not be living as himself. Instead, he will be experiencing life as a second person, called the ‘Other’. This ‘Other’ will be the one wearing a pair of glasses that records audio and video of everything that happens during these 28 days.

Mark Farid will be in front of an audience who will be allowed to observe him live for the duration of the experiment. The artist will have the basic amenities needed to survive – a bed, a shower and a toilet. A projective screen will display whatever he is seeing through his virtual reality headset and how he responds to those stimuli. Farid will not be allowed to interact with anyone as long as this radical experiment is going on but will be allowed one hour with a psychologist every single day. However, he will not be allowed to take off his headset even during the course of this meeting.

The team in charge of the project has claimed that they will start the virtual reality recording 6 days prior to the actual experiment. That way, Mark Farid will be served the exact same food as the ‘Other’ and there will be no discrepancies affecting the trial exploring the concept of human identity. Besides the exploration of this construct, another main aim of the experiment is to see what effect it has on Mark Farid as a person. Will he retain his sense of self and personality or will he start to believe that he is actually integrated into the life of the ‘Other’ so much so that he loses all perception of himself? The project – called Seeing I – is a very dangerous territory to be dabbling in but an important one nonetheless. The artist claims that he realizes the stress it will inflict on him as a person and may even distort his entire sense of self. Virtual Reality Times will keep you up to date about the latest news regarding Oculus Rift and Mark Farid’s experiment.
