With consumer level VR nearing its grand debut, the chances of putting yourself into immersive virtual worlds are getting closer to reality. However, it’s going to cost you some fortune with high-end VR headsets such as the Oculus Rift, along with a nearly top-spec computer system to run it, which Oculus VR estimates to be at $1500. But fret no more – for less than $100, quality VR experiences are still within your wallet’s reach.

Texas-based company Merge VR announced its entry into the virtual reality headset market with its mobile VR headset. Merge makes use of the smartphone’s ability to render VR content, putting it in the likes of Samsung Gear VR. But it does a few things differently. First, it’s not limited to a certain smartphone model, which means it will work with a wide range of smartphones. That makes Merge compatible with iOS and Android devices, and anything from the small iPhone 5 up to the large Galaxy Note 4 will fit.

The headset itself has a boxy form factor designed for durability and portability. Using a so-called “closed-cell technology”, the foam material used will not absorb sweat, making it easy to clean. Furthermore, its material construction contributes to portability by being lightweight. The optics can be adjusted for eye distance, viewing angle and focus, and depth of field. The actual VR experience will differ depending on your phone, so the resolution and even content available will rely on what you use.

The major selling point of Merge is that it offers dual inputs on the headset itself. Two thumbstick-type controllers sit at the top, allowing for a greater range of interaction. Merge VR can now be pre-ordered in the US for $99.
