Oniride released the second issue of Magnetique, a new comic series exclusively for Virtual Reality. This isn’t a traditional digitized comic book or some kind of VR-reader. The comic is a new experience in which each page takes you to a full 360 degrees world. The images look the same as if you are looking at a normal book, but everything happens in a virtual reality environment.

World’s First VR Comic Releases 2nd chapter

Magnetique tells the story of Nero, a young puppeteer on a trip to the coast of Cyan. The creators show a little bit about the story in the trailers and Oniride promises a story of war and revenge in the comic. The art is beautifully designed and very appealing.

“THE STORY STARTS WITH…

…a young puppeteer arriving on Cyan’s coast, a small, poor seaside village unprepared to welcome one of the most romantic stories that the poor inhabitants have ever heard.

With his itinerant stage, the young man will travel through the villages of the insland followed by increasingly anxious viewers to know the end of the story.”

You can see that speech bubbles expand when you look at them, and there are also many audio effects that increase the immersion. The VR comic is a mix of 2D art with 3D effects, it’s both immersive and quite interesting.

Beautiful Illustrations and Immersive Sound Effects

Emilio Pilliu, the artist, used only Photoshop to illustrate the comic book. The team used self-made tools to ensure the right proportions of every character, environment, and object. They also used the Unity game engine to add several stereoscopic layers to the numerous elements on every page. All images are added into an amazing 360-degree background.

The first chapter is free, but we don’t know how long something this good will remain this way, we highly recommend any user with a Gear or a Rift to try it now. Oniride is currently shipping the builds for other platforms (Google Daydream, Vive) and waiting for approval. They are also going to provide their 360Art Photoshop Plugin and 360Art Tool to create VR Artworks & Comics, to anyone interested in the tool, just click here.
