As a result of a filing at the FCC, it has emerged that Samsung is planning on launching an updated high-end virtual reality headset for its Original Samsung Odyssey. It is an FCC regulatory filing and parts of it have been redacted but at least the name is known and we can also glean out a few details about the new headset’s specs. The company, it appears, has been working on a new Samsung HMD Odyssey+ virtual reality headset which has the model number XE800ZBA.

The original Odyssey headset was first released in October 2017. The “+” branding for the updated Odyssey shows that the new model will be a refresh of the previous version rather than just an update. It will have similar specs as the previous version such as its 3.5-inch twin AMOLED screens that have a resolution of 1440×1600 per eye. It will also provide users with a 110-degree field of view and will be built with lots of sensors. The headset will feature an AKG integrated audio.

The Samsung HMD Odyssey+ VR headset will run Microsoft’s Mixed Reality software and feature an inside-out positional tracking that will allow users to experience virtual reality without the requirement of using external virtual reality hardware.

A feature update in the Odyssey+ virtual reality headset screen will be its SFS display technology for its screens although it is not yet clear what “SFS” actually means. The headset will also have a wider eye box. The documentation filed at the FCC also references “wider part of nose” as some of the new update that will minimize fogging in the lenses and most likely make the headset more comfortable to wear.

There is also the mention of the device having both USB and HDMI connectivity. It doesn’t seem likely that Samsung has adopted the new single USB Type-C cable which is expected to become the industry standard in the coming years.

The original Samsung Odyssey headset run Microsoft’s Mixed Reality software and the new version will run the same. However, the FCC filings hint at an even more exciting prospect that the Odyssey+ might support Steam VR natively enabling users to play Steam VR games directly without relying on the Microsoft Mixed Reality software.

How that will pan out is a matter of conjecture with some industry observers hinting that consumers might use the headset in conjunction with Valve’s Lighthouse controllers to realize more reliable tracking in 3D.   Alternatively, the Odyssey+ could simply herald a new era for Windows Mixed Reality providing better tracked controllers for all users which would be the ideal scenario.

It has also been rumored that Samsung is working on a wireless AR/VR combo that it will be launching soon.

The original Samsung Odyssey headset cost $500 although the price has since come down to $400.
