A few months ago, virtual reality developer Survios announced that it was working on a seafaring, pirate ship battler experience known as Battlewake that would have combat at the core of the gameplay. In June, the studio showcased the title during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and last month, it held a closed beta for the game. This week, the VR developer announced that Battlewake will be arriving on September 10 for most of the leading virtual reality headsets.

When Survios first announced the Battlewake closed beta, it was not yet sure on the range of platforms the pirate battler game would officially support. The studio has now revealed that the game will be launching on Oculus Rift, PSVR and HTC Vive. There is also a Quest version that is currently under development though it’s release date hasn’t been specified yet.

The game has several closed betas so if you haven’t had the opportunity to try them out, you can jump right in and get a feel of the nautical battler.

Battlewake will be an all-out combat experience which will have both a single-player and a multi-player mode. Players will be able to choose between one of four Sea Lords: Zhang, Diego, Rev and Calavera. Each of these lords of the seas will have their own unique ships and magical abilities which are derived from Pirate Legend. These will range from the feared Kraken to powerful tsunamis.

Battlewake will immerse you into a single-player or multiplayer seafaring campaign with lots of boss battles. It also features multiplayer deathmatch games but for the multiplayer or co-op games, the player will be piloting their own ship and controlling the navigation and all the weapons by themselves.

You will have lots of opportunities to upgrade your weaponry, ultimates along with the ship-specific stuff such as health points and defense points. Being a seafaring game in an immersive virtual reality experience, there is always the fear that the game might induce motion sickness or sea sickness but Survios has reassured that this will not be the case with Battlewake which has a locomotion system to prevent players from feeling sick while playing the game.

Gameplay

No matter your mode of play, the basic concept of Battlewake is that the player, as the captain of the ship, must steer their crew in and out of harm’s way. At the same time, the ship will have a large selection of weaponry that players can use to destroy any enemies that are inching closer. The game is an action title with quick combat engagements. Each of the ships will have a full 360-degree arsenal that includes 13 different weapons to choose from. If you want a story, you can opt for the full campaign mode.

The single-player mode provides a 20-chapter campaign where the player, as the pirate lords, embarks on a mission to discover an ancient seat of power. This chapter can also be played co-op. There is the Warfare Mode where the players will need to team up and finish various objectives. If you are looking for unmitigated carnage in the high seas, you can opt for the PvP deathmatch mode. Players will earn gold in the matches which can subsequently be spent in the Captain’s Quarters to upgrade the ships stats, arsenal and the special abilities.

Battlewake launches on multiple platforms including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Oculus Rift S on September 10. A Quest version of the game arrives later in the year although Survios hasn’t provided a specific date yet.
