The virtual reality livestreaming event app NextVR is now available for Oculus Quest. The app will be available for free and comes with a new technology that will offer users clearer and sharper video image rendering.

NextVR calls its new rendering technology ‘PAVE’ and it will activate new features including enhanced in-experience graphic overlays such as instant replays and stats as well as other multi-user interactions like game trivia during timeouts.

The NextVR app was previously available on Quest but only through the Oculus Venues app which relays communal viewing via select real-time live events. The NextVR app will offer users a single-user experience which will also include replays and extra content.

The studio has been building high quality 3D (live) video streams in 180-degrees over the past five years. The company abandoned 360-degree content so as to allow it to represent its 180-degree cutout with a higher quality standard in stereoscopic 3D. NextVR specializes in shows and sports broadcasts but the app also includes documentaries and horror movies.

NextVR has stated that the app provides users with a content selection that will best demonstrate its new rendering features. This includes a comedy show by Pete Davidson which airs from the Gotham Comedy Club in New York on September 10th.

The ‘PAVE’ technology will debut on Oculus Quest before it is launched on other platforms. According to the NextVR boss Dave Cole, the company is also planning to introduce additional improvements in image quality in the future and also leverage its PAVE technology to launch new interactive elements.

There will also be a “Best on Quest” channel that will be curated with new and optimized content for viewers including NHRA drag racing, highlights of the NBA finals as well as Day to Night Timelapse recordings and select concerts.

With the Quest launch, the NextVR supported platforms now encompass the entire selection of major virtual reality headsets including Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream, Windows VR headsets, Valve Index, PSVR and Oculus Go.

Earlier this year, NextVR had been plunged into a crisis after the company offloaded 50 of its 130 employees due to financial problems occasioned by the slowing down of the virtual reality market. However, the company’s current business model is based more on investor financing than user-generated revenues which allows it to grow into a dominant position in the market, a position which it can later on monetize through subscriptions. But the company will still need to acquire a critical mass of users that it can subsequently leverage for its monetization plans.
