The Silicon Valley startup 6D.ai has this week launched its first augmented reality cloud platform and also announced a new partnership with Qualcomm Technologies to provide the technology solution for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon mobile processing platform.

The San Francisco-based startup launched a beta for its augmented reality solution for iOS developers last October. The startup has now announced its pricing model so developers on the platform will be able to publish the first apps that tap into the AR cloud platform.

6D.ai will provide Qualcomm with the spatial understanding for the Snapdragon-based head-mounted displays (HMDs) as well as XR viewers designed for seamless connections with smartphones leveraging the Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform.

6D.ai has also added an Android solution which in combination with its existing iOS support, now rounds off its cross-platform offerings. According to 6D.ai CEO Matt Miesnieks, its 3D model of the world will increasingly be central to the apps of the future which will leverage such platforms to create new immersive experiences. Businesses across multiple industries are now working on developing spatially aware applications which offer users much more than just augmented reality, location-based services, scanning, robotics and drones. The company’s roll-out of its business model along with its partnership with Qualcomm is the first step towards developing its 3D map of the world.

The two tech companies are planning to partner together in optimizing the 6D.ai reality platform for the Snapdragon-powered XR devices. They will accomplish this by leveraging AI processing and advanced computer vision that will enable both device makers and developers to build fully immersive apps delivering life-like experiences and blurring the lines between the real and the virtual worlds.

XR experiences that are powered by both AI and 5G have a massive potential to impact the next generation of immersive mobile computing. By creating 3D world maps, 6D.ai is strengthening current experiences while also laying the groundwork for a future where XR will completely understand the real world. It is also creating a platform that allows developers to build the next generation of applications which will recognize, interpret and also interact with the real world.

With beta Android roll-out of its platform, 6D.ai is enabling the cross-platform experiences which will allow users to accurately and persistently share the same experiences that are built on 6D across multiple viewing devices.

6D.ai has also announced that any app shipped on the 6D.ai platform before 31 December 2019 will get free use of the platform’s Startup SDK for a period of up to three years.

Beginning next year, the startup will begin monetizing the AR Cloud service on a per month or per app billing. The billing will be based on the number 3D map downloads. The startup also announced that some of the leading developers such as Nexus Studios, Accenture and Autodesk are already developing apps for the 6D.ai AR cloud platform that realistically interact with our world.

The beta test for the Android version of the platform has started already and according to the startup, it will support the latest Samsung products. Later on, the platform will incorporate support for AR-capable devices that are built with a Snapdragon 845 chip or higher. If you are an Android user, you can sign up for the beta test now.

On the Path to AR Cloud Glasses

6D.ai’s partnership with Qualcomm, Nreal and Deutsche Telekom has set the ball rolling for a future AR cloud hardware. Qualcomm will be working with 6D.ai to optimize the AR Cloud platform for Snapdragon chips and to also support Qualcomm’s XR Viewer initiative. The Qualcomm standard ensures that all 5G smartphones that are built with a Snapdragon chip will serve as a source for portable XR devices with the connection to the smartphone being made through a USB-C connection. The Nreal Light mixed reality glasses could be used in this setup and it will be one of the first headsets to leverage the AR Cloud platform thanks to the partnership with 6D.ai. The data glasses are to be launched in limited quantities before the end of 2019 with a retail price of $500.

6D.ai was founded in 2017 as a spin-off of the Oxford University’s Active Vision Lab. The startup currently has 16 employees.
