Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport AG and Munich Airport operator AeroGround Flughafen Munchen GmbH have partnered with the startups Innoactive and ThreeDee to develop a virtual reality training tool for ground handling operations. New digital training content has also been developed for the joint virtual reality training tool.

Virtual Reality Training in Frankfurt and Munich Airports

Trainers will be able to access the virtual reality training platform from various airports. The VR tool can also be adapted to meet local training requirements. The tool is so easy to use and allows even people without programming tools to participate in the programs.

One of the training modules in the tool allows users to practice ground handling processes that should be performed once an aircraft is in its parking position. Other planned modules in the airport VR training tool includes a dedicated training course for baggage sorting as well as apron safety training.

The airport training modules will be available in both German and English. They will be useful not only for new staff looking to acquire ground handling skills but also for employees who already have ground handling expertise but would like to spruce up on their knowledge and skills.

The VR training modules enables ground handling staff to practice the requisite processes within the safety of the virtual space before they begin handling tasks in the real environment.

VR Ground handling Training

The VR training content can also be shared and used through an online platform known as the Innoactive Hub which has been developed by the Munich-based company Innoactive. The required software for the platform has been developed by the 3D visualization company ThreeDee GmbH. The project is also supported by Flughafen Munchen GmbH. The Innoactive platform allows for switching the virtual training content between various locations that allows the team to implement common quality standards in all locations much faster and in a more efficient way.

The virtual reality training applications are designed to complement the live training provided to ground handling staff. The practical exercises are easily accessible and can be accessed and completed at any time. Virtual reality training also cuts down on the time that a user would typically need in live training when they have to wait for an aircraft to arrive in the handling position. The Fraport-AeroGround Flughafen Munchen GmbH initiative is the first time that airports have jointly invested in interactive virtual reality training content.

After the test phase, developers will perform a review on the extent to which the content can be refined and delivered to partners through a joint platform. Virtual reality training can also help in decoupling the training of personnel from the everyday restrictions of the workplace.

Up to 500 people will be trained virtually using the tool during the first phase of deployment. Airports can use the tool to offer refresher training for its staff, significantly reduce the training time and also offer airports a more sustainable and standardized learning experience.
