The Vuzix M400 smart glasses were launched last year. They are enterprise mixed reality wearables that were built for medical applications in areas like dental work.

With the runaway spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vuzix’s smart glasses can now be put into new and timely uses. The company has partnered with the Onsight AR and collaborative software manufacturer Librestream to create real-time hands-free thermal imaging smart glasses that can be used in scanning and screening people for COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Vuzix M400 Librestream Solution

The partnership will bring Librestream’s thermal imaging technology to the frontline screeners. Vuzix will supply the smart glasses while Librestream supplies the ruggedized industrial wearable camera known as Onsight Cube. The camera will transmit the real-time thermal video feed to the Vuzix M400 heads-up display.

Librestream will also supply the Onsight software which can be used in wirelessly connecting the screeners to medical experts using the Onsight AR platform who might be remotely based elsewhere.

The thermal imaging smart glasses can be used by first responders, medical screeners as well as border patrol guards in collaboration with global medical experts as well as other experts involved in containing a flu pandemic. The colorful images display heat maps which can be quickly used in detecting body temperatures that surpass certain thresholds, certain heat flare-ups or reductions.

The person wearing the thermal imaging smart glasses looks at people that are around them and they can see the device camera’s raw thermal video. Health practitioners that are situated elsewhere are able to capture snapshots or videos, zoom and adjust lighting or control the thermal output settings. They are even able to safely store and share the thermal images.  The real-time thermal images and data enable health practitioners to make time-sensitive assessments without exposing themselves to health risks.

The two companies believe this thermal imaging wearable can speed up health data sharing and also help enhance the safety of the health practitioners. Additionally, it enables frontline health workers to gather measurements from a safe distance and identify individuals that have elevated temperatures without having to rely on their hands.

As the coronavirus cases continues to multiply across the world almost exponentially, concerns about the pandemic are reaching fever pitch and countries are taking drastic measures to contain the pandemic which has a high contagion and can remain undetected for several days. Entire countries have been put on lockdown. Some countries have totally shut down their borders. Most countries are focusing their containment efforts on screening travelers at the ports of entry. The Vuzix-Librestream solution can come in handy in screening and detection in a high contagion situation.

The two companies have yet to reveal the pricing for the combined Vuzix-Librestream solution. The M400 device alone goes for $1,800 and it can also be used with an Android-based smart wearable for various uses, leveraging the Qualcomm’s XR1 processor.
