Bloomberg is reporting that the upcoming iPhone Pro models will have a lidar scanner installed at the back, just like the current iPad Pro. The report cites anonymous sources.

Apple iPad Pro LIDAR

In the iPad Pro, the lidar scanner shoots a laser light into a room to measure the distance that light has to travel to an object and back to the sensor. The surrounding area can subsequently be scanned in three dimensions through this light signal. This works at a distance of up to five meters.

The video below shows this process: –

Since the release of the ARKit 3.5, developers now have access to the new technology that now clarifies and also speeds up the previous scanning process that was purely camera-based. Additionally, the software also recognizes simple surfaces and objects such as walls, floors as well as windows during the scanning process.

Lidar and 5G: The iPhone Pro is Now AR-Fit

The new lidar scanner are in Apple’s flagship smartphones but the cheaper models are still only equipped with the conventional optical cameras. For AR developers, this can lead to an unwanted market fragmentation where Augmented Reality apps may not run well on cheaper Apple models.

For Augmented Reality to work more efficiently, it requires a fast processor. The Bloomberg report states that there will be a significant upgrade in the performance of the processor, particularly for AR and AI applications.

Additionally, the new Apple smartphones should be 5G-compatible. Visually, they will be based on the iPhone 5 with an angular screen rather than a rounded screen.

The iPhone Pro 2020 release will go on as scheduled in spite of the coronavirus pandemic. The release is slated for the usual fall window but it could be moved forward a few weeks according to Bloomberg sources.

Apple might be more successful with Lidar than Google had been with its tango hardware a few years back.
