Not many people are used to social isolation even though it has been creeping into our modern lifestyles even before the coronavirus pandemic hit us hard. For the younger generation, the social isolation is only temporary and will soon go away as the restrictions ease up as the pandemic subsides. For seniors, though, social isolation is a more permanent and daunting reality.

MyndVR is a health and wellness company which develops solutions for senior citizens. The company has now announced a collaboration with Pico Interactive and Littlstar to help combat social isolation in senior care communities in the US.

As the COVID-19 pandemic hits hard across the US and in senior’s care communities in particular, seniors are finding themselves grappling with ever increasing isolation as families and friends are no longer permitted to visit. The elderly are more at risk of having a fatal outcome from a coronavirus infection and most currently have contact only with the medial personnel inside the care homes. The increased isolation can have a knock-on effect that is likely to have more adverse effects on their health and well-being.

MyndVR, Pico Interactive and Littlstar are partnering to provide these senior care communities with a free VR headset as well as training and support. The seniors will also get an annual subscription to the MyndVR network where they can get access to senior-friendly contact.

The new partnership is one of the first instances where the AR/VR industry is stepping in to try and alleviate an isolation crisis. The three companies are planning to deliver MyndVR to seniors’ care communities that are in need across all the 50 states in the US and which are facing increased isolation due to the COVID-19 crisis. The companies see the opportunity to virtually expand the world through 360-degree immersive VR content as one that could bring much happiness as well as comfort to the elderly grappling with isolation.

The companies want to instill the importance of maintaining the highest standards of hygiene in combating COVID-19 so part of the MyndVR training will be on how to properly sanitize the headsets in between the uses. This will be offered via print instructions and video tutorials. MyndVR will also provide alcohol wipes to ensure that every care community has the necessary equipment for sufficient protection from viral infection.

The design of the headset is one that is easy to use and they are also durable and sanitizable, ideal for an immersive experience in the age of COVID-19.

Senior care communities interested in trying out this solution can apply here. MyndVR also has a GoFundMe page where people can contribute to help the company expand access to its solution across the 50 states in the US.
