New sets of images of the next Oculus Quest VR headset (‘Oculus Quest 2’) were once again leaked on Friday. The new headset is yet to be officially unveiled and all that is available at the moment are some limited leaked details and very vivid images of what the headset looks like from various angles.

Another Oculus Quest 2 render has apparently leaked once again via WalkingCat Twitter account. The first renders leaked out on Wednesday this week showing the front part of the virtual reality headset with its new controllers as seen above.

On Friday, the WalkingCat account once again shared an apparent render of the new headset’s lenses from a central bottom angle.

On Friday, the images also leaked from a different source for the first time although the image showing its lenses is too blurry to enable one to make out the details.

Last week, the Japanese tech news publication Nikkei reported that the new Oculus Quest 2 headset has already gone into production this month and that Facebook was targeting 2 million units by the end of the year. Full rate production for the new headsets is reportedly set to begin next week.

From the images leaked this week, the ‘Oculus Quest 2’ headset looks just like the current Oculus Quest headset but there are some key differences in its design. The most obvious is the color. It also appears that the headset does not feature manual eye distance control (lens adjustment slider). This is usually located on the area to the left of the nose but it doesn’t appear to be present from the images leaked so far.

The new Oculus Quest headset does not seem to have a lens separation adjustment slider at its bottom like the current Quest headset. The Rift S headset also doesn’t have this feature even though the current Quest headset has it. According to Facebook, the Oculus Rift S lenses are best suited for users who have an IP of between 61.5 and 65.5mm. Based on the most current publicly available IPD dataset, this represents just 46% of men an 43% of women.

The Oculus Quest 2 side angle images showed the new lenses in comparison to the current Quest headset but from the images but is not easy to determine from a low angle.

For the time being, the new leaked angle doesn’t give us any hints on whether this the case. It is still unclear whether this is a new lens shape or whether the image simply shows a raised material that obscures the actual lens shape. Some details from the image also raise questions on the kind of optical system that has been used in the new headset.

A structure with the number 2 below it can also be seen in the same space that has been occupied by the proximity sensor in all of Oculus’ previous headsets. For the time being, we can only speculate on what this could be. It could be a toggle switch, a design mark for the new Oculus Quest 2 headset or simply some setting indicator.

The images also show a significant gap which exists between the lenses and the internal plastic frame. UploadVR suggests that this could be a hint to the fact that the lenses can be adjusted to match the wearer’s eyes in spite of the fact there doesn’t appear to be a slider at the bottom. Perhaps it could signal a design where the wearer can simply move the headset’s lenses by pushing one of the cups. Such a design would be more compact and mechanically simpler than the use of a slider to move the lenses.

According to UploadVR, Facebook could also be trying to trim own as much material as possible from the new Quest headset so the internal differences in the old and the new Oculus Quest headsets could be down to bid to keep the weights low. However, so far, these are just observational speculations based on the pictures released so far and do not in any way imply that they will feature in the final “Quest 2” headset design.

At the moment, we are still not in a position to definitively determine if the lenses features in the image leaks above will be new or whether they move but the images are showing some design elements that we have not witnessed before in the Oculus headsets.
