The Hitman 3 with an exclusive PlayStation VR mode is set to be released on January 20, 2021.

Also planned is a free tech upgrade for the next-gen consoles which also benefit the PSVR ode as Sony’s virtual reality headset is backwards compatible with PlayStation 5. The developer studio IO Interactive also released a new trailer of the game last week.

Hitman 3 is the final installment in the World of Assassination trilogy. Pre-orders of the game are already available and the game is slated for release on January 20, 2021.

Hitman 3 is set to launch on a number of platforms including PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox, Xbox Series X, Xbox One as well as on PC (through the Epic Games Store). The good news for virtual reality fans is that Hitman 3 will support PSVR, thereby bringing Agent 47 into the VR environment for the firs time.

It was also confirmed that even though Hitman 3 will launch on PS5, it will still support PSVR via PS4. It is also known that PS5 will be backwards compatible with the current PSVR hardware although it isn’t clear when this will come into effect.

There already exists a free next-gen upgrade scheme for Hitman 3 which is currently underway. Although PlayStation 5 will hit the streets by January 2021, you shouldn’t worry much if you are yet to upgrade consoles by then. You will still be able to purchase a digital copy of Hitman 3 on PS4 and you will get access to the PS5 version of the game free of charge in case you opt to upgrade to the next generation.

Both versions of the game -the regular and the deluxe editions- are already available for preorder.  The deluxe edition of the game features extra cosmetic suits and items as well as a digital art book and soundtrack. It will also have director commentary introductions along with “deluxe escalation missions”. The escalation missions in the previous Hitman games are now reworked levels using existing maps and with more difficult and varied objectives compared to the original campaign.

The Gold and Silver editions in Hitman 2 gave players access to the post-launch campaign content such as the bank level which is set in New York and the Haven Island level which is set in the Maldives. So far, there doesn’t appear to be any mention of post-launch campaign content for the deluxe edition of Hitman 3. It is possible that all the campaign content is set to be released on January 21 after the release of the game and that no campaign levels will be released as paid DLC post-launch at this time. This is all speculative at the moment.

Preordering any of the game’s editions provides a user with access to the Trinity Pack that includes three sets of cosmetics each with white, red and black versions of Agent 47’s briefcase, suit and gun.

We already know that Hitman 3 will also have a level in Dubai and one in Dartmoor, England.

You can check out the existing Hitman series before you immerse yourself into Hitman 3 early next year in PSVR. The first game in the upgraded franchise is freely available on the Epic Games Store this month, for PC. You will also be able to play the Hitman and Hitman 2 levels on PSVR so you can as well wait and play the whole series in January 2021.

As far as we know now, the VR mode seems to be reserved for PlayStation VR. However, it is possible that the PSVR exclusivity could only be limited in time and that afterwards, we could see a rollout in other VR platforms as was the case with the Borderlands 2 VR and Skyrim VR. Again, at the moment, this is purely speculative.

The extent to which Hitman 3 VR will leverage the computing power of the PS5 is also unclear. So far, there haven’t been any announcements of PSVR games that are optimized for PS5. Sony’s VR strategy has so far been a cautious one. On its VR future, the only confirmation it has provided so far is that PS5 will support PSVR and its associated peripherals.

We also have no idea on when PSVR 2 is likely to be launched. There have been a lot of PSVR 2 rumors from various sources over the past year.
