According to HP, those who pre-order the headsets from September 24 will get their deliveries at the beginning of December. The repeated postponement has been inconvenient for HP. The intervening period has seen Facebook launch its new Oculus Quest 2 headset which also offers a high-resolution display, a higher refresh rate as well as a PC VR connection (via Oculus Link) and a standalone mode.

In a statement, HP has stated that pre-orders will be prioritized for the time or date when the order was made to HP’s channel partners. HP stated that the demand for the HP Reverb G2 has been high.

The Reverb G2 headset costs $599 and features four cameras as well as a similar audio system to the high-end Valve Index headset. It also features an IPD fitting adjustment along with a very high resolution thanks to the Valve optics.

The Reverb G2 is an entirely PC VR headset and should be ahead of Quest 2 in terms of image quality and comfort. The G2 also has a high resolution of 2,160 x 2,160 pixels per eye. The image in Reverb G2 is also rendered natively instead of being streamed via video.

The Reverb G2 doesn’t have a significant superior advantage over the Quest 2. Besides, the Quest 2 gives you direct access to the exclusive Oculus Store and PC VR (including SteamVR) via Oculus Link, an advantage that you won’t get with the Reverb G2 that doesn’t allow you to purchase directly from the Oculus Store.

The G2 was developed in collaboration with Valve and Microsoft. Valve contributed the special ear speakers that float in front of the user’s ear instead of lying on top like the headphones. Valve also provided the soft face cushion.

Microsoft contributed the tracking system for the Windows VR headsets; the tracking volume is now considerably larger than that of the standard Windows headsets due to the two additional tracking cameras on the sides of the headset casing and the controller has also been improved. The Reverb G2 controllers are now similar to the Touch controllers in the Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S headsets.

With Facebook finally dropping a pure PC VR experience, there is an opportunity for the likes of HP, Valve and Samsung to fill in the gap. However, HTC has already missed the mark with its Vive Cosmos while Samsung appears to be making a VR retreat. Pimax headsets still appeal to the experimental VR enthusiasts. As a result, HP will likely share the PC VR market with Valve Index for now. Valve’s VR headsets are significantly more expensive than the Reverb G2 but they offer users superior quality when it comes to controllers and tracking capabilities.
