HTC is planning to build on its early virtual reality successes by launching new virtual reality headsets in 2021 that will take VR to “the next level”. No details have been divulged yet on these upcoming virtual reality headsets.

According to HTC, the new headsets should be as exciting as HTC Vive five years back.

HTC has been mum on its plans for its next virtual reality headset, so much so that many in the industry have even speculated that the company might be shifting its gaze away from the consumer virtual reality space. It is not yet apparent whether HTC’s groundbreaking VR headset will be a consumer or enterprise headset but in an interview with  Accenture’s European boss Nick Rosa and the nonprofit AIXR’s Daniel Colaianni, HTC China’s President Alvin Wang Graylin confirmed that the company is set to launch new and innovative Vive products next year.

In the interview, Graylin reconfirmed that HTC is set to launch new headsets in 2021 and that these new devices will be breakthrough devices that will delight users in the same way that HTC’s first Vive did. Graylin reiterated that he is excited about the upcoming HTC device and that it would take the industry to a “new level”.

The comparison to the effect that the first Vive had on the industry is exciting as it suggests that the new HTC headsets could come with some technical innovations. The original HTC Vive was also a breakthrough device, offering users room-filling tracking and VR controllers that made its closest Oculus competitor feel a little archaic. HTC was the first VR hardware manufacturer to introduce full-body tracking and wireless PC-VR experience through a wireless adapter.

The HTC Vive comparison also suggests the new VR headsets will also be aimed more at the end users than at enterprise users. This would be an unexpected turn following the Cosmos debacle and the company’s strong B2B focus in recent years.

All the signs at the moment point to a successor to the Vive Focus 2. That means they might be standalone virtual reality headsets similar to the Oculus Quest 2. It is even said that the same powerful chip, the Snapdragon XR2 is built into the new headset. For many enterprises and end users unhappy with Facebook’s data sucking policy, such a headset would be a welcome alternative.

HTC teased slim virtual reality headsets at the beginning of this year with the code name Proton. According to the statements at the time, two versions of this virtual reality headset were planned including a completely standalone VR headset version as well as an all-in-two device that is connected to a smartphone player and 5G.

HTC’s new headsets are likely to be presented during the CES 2021. HTC has regularly used this platform to unveil new VR products in the past. The world’s largest electronics fair will take place from January 11th to 14th in a virtual format.
