In Warplanes: WW1 Fighters, you will be piloting WW1 biplanes to combat missions using only your Touch controllers.

The new SideQuest game is developed by the Polish studio Home Net Games and brings its experience in developing successful mobile games into virtual reality.  Unlike much of the other SideQuest content, Warplanes: WW1 Fighters is neither a tech demo nor a side project but a real game. There is a free demo of the game but you can purchase a full campaign for $9.99 on Itch.io.

The title is almost coming to the end of its initial development and a major update is now planned before the official release. The free demo allows you to play two missions and access German planes. If you purchase the title, you will also gain access to the full Central Powers campaign. The next version will also include a Triple Entente campaign as well as three of its aircraft including the Breguet 14, Airco DH.2 and S.E.5.

Warplanes: WW1 Fighters is a made-for-VR experience just like SteamVR’s VTOL. You will be interacting directly with the cockpit controls via your Touch controllers. In most of the game, one of your hands will be on the yoke while the other will be on the throttle. This gives you a more immersive VR flight experience than what you would get with thumbsticks.

This game feels more like an arcade shooter rather than a simulator although the settings give you a very realistic flight model mode.

You will go on combat against the enemy’s bombers, fighters, ships and barrage balloons. The biplanes are very authentic to that era and allow you to go on close range dogfights and deploy the hand-dropped bombs.

You will get some of the best graphics for a Quest-native flight title so far with very detailed cockpits that have very high-resolution textures. The title also features very impressive atmospheric lighting.
