The popular Virtual Desktop PC VR streaming feature is now available on the Oculus Quest Store. The feature enables Quest/Quest users to wirelessly stream PC VR headsets to their Oculus Quest headsets while Facebook’s own PC Connection Oculus Link requires a USB connection.

Users can now access the feature without resorting to sideloading.

Virtual Desktop Wireless Streaming on Quest

Guy Godin’s Virtual Desktop was first released in 2016 and has become the go-to feature for wireless VR streaming enabling users to gain access to their desktop PCs in virtual reality by using Oculus Rift/Rift S, Quest/Quest 2 and SteamVR headsets. Soon after its release, Guy Godin had released an experimental update that enables Quest users to wirelessly stream their PCVR content to their standalone VR headsets.

In June 2019, soon after the feature’s release, Facebook had forced Godin to remove the feature from the Oculus Quest store, citing quality concerns. Facebook explained that since it had no way of knowing the kind of Wi-Fi Virtual Desktop users had, it could not guarantee a good VR experience for users using the app thus had to restrict apps like Virtual Desktop. In response to the app’s response to last year’s restriction, Godin had released a patch through SideQuest that enabled users to once again wirelessly access Oculus Rift and Steam VR from their Oculus Quest headsets. However, SideQuest installations are fiddly. While SideQuest is free, it requires users to register a developer account with Oculus to sideload content onto their virtual reality headsets but is more convenient compared to pursuing a direct integration with the Quest Store.

This week, Godin announced that PCVR streaming will once again be available via the official app so o more need for sideloading or fixing additional patches.

Oculus Quest users will now be able to use Virtual Desktop to gain access to the whole catalog of SteamVR and Oculus Rift titles ranging from the AAA release such as Boneworks and Half-Life: Alyx to some of the fan favorites like Plasmaphobia and Blade & Sorcery.
