HTC’s Vive Facial Tracker goes on sale in the US from March 24 and is priced at $129.99.

This is a face-tracking accessory that is compatible with the Vive Pro, a headset that currently makes up just 2% of the VR devices being used on Valve’s Steam. Vive Pro is, for the moment, only in stock for the full kit which retails at $1,199.

The Vive Pro Tracker Facial Tracker is also compatible with the Vive Pro Eye, a headset that has eye-tracking functionality and which retails for $200 more than the Vive Pro headset. If you acquired any of HTC’s newly announced third-generation Vive Trackers that retail at $129.99 apiece, HTC pretty much offers you a complete body and face-tracking VR headset solution for less than $2,000. You still need a VR-ready PC that can run high-end virtual reality.

According to HTC, the Facial Tracker provides users with an “accurate real-time depiction of almost the entire lower facial area in VR”. It does this by tracking 38 facial movements across the user’s lips, jaw, teeth, tongue, chin, and cheeks. This Facial Tracker is a dual-camera accessory with a 60Hz tracing rate as well as an infrared illuminator which, according to HTC, provides a tracking latency of “sub-10ms response time”.

HTC is highly likely to announce a new standalone virtual reality headset at some point this year although it isn’t clear what market this new VR device will target. The new HTC device will likely also have inside-out tracking and will operate within the processing and power consumption constraints of the XR2 mobile chipset. Consequently, HTC’s full-body tracking accessories such as the Facial Tracker will likely stay tied up to the company’s Vive Pro line of VR headsets. It will be interesting to see what HTC has in store for us in the course of the year.
