The app’s developer Oisoi also plans to launch its Kickstarter campaign on September 1 but the 2022 Quest launch date does not hinge on the success of this Kickstarter campaign, according to the company. Funds from the Kickstarter campaign will be used to fund a faster PC VR port of the app as well as other features. It is not known, yet, how much Oisoi plans to raise in its Kickstarter campaign but if the company hits its fundraising target, then Painting VR app might go from the Oculus Quest App Lab to the official Quest Store early next year.

In the future, the app will also be multiplayer, allowing for collaborative work. The developer sees this being deployed not only in fun experiences for friends but also as a way of delivering virtual art lessons as well as in hosting exhibition and studio visits.

Painting VR has very realistic physics. When you push the virtual brush against the wall, you will see it bend exactly as you would expect it to in real life which enables the user to make very immersive strokes that feel authentic to the touch. When using Painting VR, you will feel in control when making the strokes so the app should work nicely for actual painters who could use its tools to conjure very realistic works of art in virtual reality.

Tilt Brush was, undoubtedly, the best VR painting app but since its abandonment by Google, several other VR apps have emerged to take its place. There is Vermillion which allows you to conjure realistic oil paintings on the platform. There is also the free immersive experience Brushwork that you can try out in WebXR.
