A press release describes the Uncharted Adventure experience as using innovative technologies like augmented reality and physical effects which will bring the classic Disney stories to the new realm of immersive family entertainment in which guests will be immersed in a multidimensional journey into the worlds of Moana, Peter Pan, Vaiana and Nemo.

Meet Disney Characters in Augmented Reality

The augmented reality technologies rely on smartphones that will be transformed into “magic binoculars” with AR. Should a guest point this at the night sky, they will see new star constellations that show characters from Disney and Pixar films. Users can subsequently choose on whether they wish to virtually travel to New Orleans, Motunui, Sydney, and Neverland where they will perform various tasks that take them through the whole ship.

Users will be solving puzzles and finding special objects as well as props that will bring the animated characters in the experience to reality. Some of the things that they can do include meeting Vaiana from the Disney film by the same name, diving with Nemo from the Finding Nemo (2003) film, cooking with Princess Tiana from Kiss the Frog (2009) or conjuring the fairy Tinker Bell (2018).

The highlight of the Augmented Reality experience is a live event in which guests and other AR players will battle a Disney villain.

Augmented Reality for Families but Only via a Smartphone

Uncharted Adventure has been designed to accommodate several participants simultaneously. It will enable families to explore Disney’s AR worlds together.

Disney is obviously relying on smartphones instead of AR glasses for its latest attraction. AR glasses would be superb for such an experience but they have obvious disadvantages such as the high cost, fragility and many of them are still not technically proficient for such an experience. Smartphones, on the other hand, are universally available.

The experience has attracted criticism from some quarters. Some Disney fans think the experience will make them stare too long on their smartphones which wouldn’t be an ideal experience if one is going on a cruise.
