Beat Games has finally implemented a crossplay between Oculus and Steam for its hit Beat Saber title, a move likely to give renewed hope to PSVR fans.

The multiplayer mode of the rhythm game appeared in October 2020 following the launch of the Oculus Quest 2 headset. This mode now allows up to five virtual reality players to play together.

The title’s crossplay functionality was previously only confined within the Oculus ecosystem. That means players with the Oculus headset could not connect to the players with the Steam version and vice versa. Beat Games is finally closing this artificial gap and is now offering the players the option of using the multiplayer mode of the headset regardless of the platform (Steam or Oculus) that the player is on.

Is Multiplayer for PSVR in the Offing?

The addition of crossplay between Steam and Oculus still leaves out a key demographic in the VR ecosystem: PSVR fans. This Beat Saber version still doesn’t feature a multiplayer mode after one year and multiple postponements.

On Twitter, Beat Games affirmed that the studio was still working on the implementation so as to provide “the best multiplayer experience” and that fans should “stay tuned” on its coming prospects. Accordingly, the Beat Games team also wants to support cross-play for PlayStation VR which will allow PSVR players to also connect with players on Steam and Oculus.

The expanded crossplay functionality follows the release of the Skrillex Music Pack in late August which featured eight tracks by the EDM artist. This is now the tenth paid DLC for Beat Saber and, like other official content, it can also be played in multiplayer mode.

The use of custom songs and the multiplayer mode is only possible with the PC-VR version at the moment. For Oculus Quest, you have to install a modified version of Beat Saber that allows you to import custom songs but it does not support the multiplayer mode.
