Ghostbusting comes to augmented reality. Imprezario Entertainment has moved the battle against the impending apocalypse to augmented reality (AR). Ghostbusters: Afterlife ScARe is now on augmented reality and brings with it marshmallow males along with ghostly creatures into the real world.

In Ghostbusters: Afterlife ScARe, you will be working alongside the Ghostbusters to redeem the planet from a ghostly apocalypse. The title uses AR to immerse players deep into the new movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife where you will be cast as one of the legendary Ghostbusters. You will be defending and saving the real-world surroundings from the coming ghostly apocalypse. You will accomplish this by strapping a proton pack and then going against the supernatural entities.

The first two episodes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife ScARe started on November 19th and were free. Additional episodes are premium and are planned for months thereafter.

Apart from the camera and touchscreen, the game also uses the smartphone’s LED light. It is recommended that you use a headphone because apart from the vibrations, there is also a spatial binaural mix for better immersion.

The story of Phoebe’s troupe is at the heart of the AR rendition by the director and co-writer Jason Reitman who is, incidentally, the son of Ivan Reitman who directed the popular first two parts of the film in the 1980s.

Crouch, dodge, and catch ghosts

Players inside Ghostbusters: Afterlife ScARe will uncover the evil past of the city and overcome it through various mechanics. To accomplish this, they have to evade paranormal attacks by moving their smartphones or they will have to wipe away the virtual slime off the screen in case of missteps.

The approach to the ghosts with the flashing blaster also plays an important role in the trailer. Interactions with characters and solved ESP puzzles provide the virtual ghost hunter with nuclear cells for their equipment.

In case of any missteps, you can suddenly find yourself electrified. After all, as Reitman explains, Ghostbusters: Afterlife has always been waking up the inner ghost hunter in us and grabbing a packet of protons.

The tense ghostbusting adventure is loosened by video calls from some film actors. The list of guest appearances includes Celeste O’Connor, Dan Aykroyd, Logan Kim, and Finn Wolfhard. Just like in Pokémon Go, collecting new creatures like the new “Muncher” appears to play an important role in the game.

It isn’t clear whether or the extent to which the ghost hunting will also be linked to a real map. It’s unclear whether the ghost hunt in this AR rendition can come ever reach the popularity of Nintendo’s pocket monsters. It’s important to remember that even the Harry Potter AR game was a flop although the Pokémon Go developer has since switched the game on once again.

David Kwong is responsible for the Ghostbusters: Afterlife ScARe mechanics. So far, he has mainly appeared as a magician, author, and puzzle game tinkerer such as in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol or Now You See Me.
