A Virtual Reality version of AVICII Invector (2019) is coming to Oculus Quest (2) on January 27th. Dubbed AVICII Invector: Encore Edition, it celebrates and pays tribute to the music of the late Swedish DJ Tim ‘AVICII’ Bergling in VR.

The AVICII VR experience is a port of the console and PC title by the same name that was released at the end of 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows. The VR rendition celebrates the music of the late DJ and music producer.

Tim Bergling’s father Klas Bergling developed the original in collaboration with the publisher Wired Productions and the studio Hello There Games.

AVICII Invector isn’t a game for those who don’t like movement. It might be less appealing to fans of rhythm games such as Synth Riders and Beat Saber as it involves pressing keys instead of moving your whole body. AVICII fans who are ok with enjoying the music without much dancing or movement will be happy with the game. Besides, there are VR games such as Thumber and Tetris Effect with music and visual effects but which don’t entail lots of movement or physical effect and which are equally enjoyable.

In AVICII Invector, you will be controlling a spaceship that travels a distance to the beat of the music and you have to press the right keys at the right time in order to cleverly steer the spaceship through the gates. Every route has four levels of difficulty and the tracks have been grouped together to form a campaign.

Just like the version that was launched on PC and console in 2019, AVICII Invector: Encore Edition on Meta Quest (2) will also have 35 tracks including some of the mega tracks such as The Nights, Wake Me Up, Levels, Peace of Mind, Freak, and S.O.S. It will also have seven worlds along with four difficulty levels that players can master.

From the trailer, it looks like AVICII Invector features the original’s gamepad-focused beat mechanics which require the player to pilot a pint-sized spaceship while pressing button combinations to the beat.

The approach isn’t as VR-forward as many avid VR enthusiasts would wish as far as the game design is concerned but passionate AVICII fans would probably not mind as this is simply a tribute to the late musician.

The Artist Was Fascinated with Virtual Reality in His Lifetime

The artist was involved in the development of the original while he was still alive, according to Hello There Games CEO Oskar Eklund. When both started working on the game, Tim was sent an early VR headset prototype and he was reportedly quite fascinated with the technology and the possibilities it provided.

All the music royalties from the game will go to Tim Bergling Foundation, a Swedish foundation that was founded by Tim’s parents and which is committed to treating mental illness, among others.

AVICII Invector: Encore Edition is set to be released on January 27th, 2022 for Meta Quest 1 and Quest 2 by the developer Hello There Games and its publisher Wired Productions. Click here to wishlist the game.
