Stockholm-based XR game developer Resolution Games is reporting that it attained a number of growth of milestones in 2021. The year also saw the studio acquire another Sweden-based VR company known as Zenz VR. Resolution Games’ report is a positive sign for an industry that has faced jitters this year on the fears of a global recession.

Resolution Games was founded in 2015 in Stockholm and is better known for VR hits such as Demeo and Blaston. Demeo is currently one of the top 25 most successful premium VR games on Meta Quest based on the number of reviews on the Oculus Store.

Resolution Games’ specialization is typically in the multiplayer XR titles that feature a live service character such as in Blaston and Demeo. These two titles have undergone ongoing development since their release and the studio updates them regularly with fresh free content.

Through these titles, Resolution Games is trying to create social microcosms or tinyverses that will be the building blocks for the future metaverse.

The studio is now reporting its fifth consecutive year of profitability. Resolution Games also reported close to fourfold growth in its B2C revenues as well as threefold growth in its total game downloads in the year 2021 compared to the previous year. The studio also grew its talent by 55% compared to the end of 2021, increasing its headcount to 158 employees.

Resolution Games has invested most of its profits into building its team. It had a headcount of 108 employees at the end of 2021. The number of its employees is expected to grow from the current 158 to more than 200 by the end of the year.

Resolution Games’ latest round of investment netted it $25 million last July and will go a long way in its growth and expansion plans. So far, the Stockholm-based game developer has raised $38.5 million, which is among the highest for studios doing VR and AR games.

Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm says that the company has had the opportunity to work out what works best for immersive play thanks to its early plunge in this market segment. As a result, the company is now in a unique position to put into practice what it has learned as it explores the next generation of technologies such as augmented reality and mixed reality.

Palm says the fast growth in VR headset sales along with the rise of next-gen AR and MR has put the studio in a position where it can define the next generation of play as an early mover.

Resolution Games also acqui-hired Zenz VR, a talent-based acquisition that sees Zenz VR’s employees joining Resolution and bolstering its current projects. Zenz’s current IPs weren’t part of the acquisition. Some of Zenz’s staff are already working in Resolution’s Augmented Reality division.

Resolution has also expanded into the U.S., opening an Austin, TX-based subsidiary known as Resolution Games Inc. The US-based offshoot is run by Resolution Games co-founder Paul Brady and currently has 8 employees.
