HalfLife 2: VR is set to launch on 16 September and is expected to be even better after launch.

The team working on the VR mod announced the launch date on their project website. The mod has been under a private beta test for the past few months and is soon scheduled to enter public beta.

The mod team says it has had “overwhelmingly positive feedback” from its private beta testers and that it is now ready to take the game to the public soon.

It isn’t clear whether the team will get an ok from Steam. The game can’t be published on Steam without a license and the developers say they are currently waiting for feedback from Valve. The installation of the game would be more cumbersome without a license although this wouldn’t delay the release. If the mod team doesn’t get a Valve nod, the game will be released outside Steam.

The launch of the open beta isn’t the end of the road for the mod, though. The team has published a roadmap that outlines its next steps on how it will improve HalfLife 2: VR and make it better. For instance, there are plans to add episodic support, improve movement and comfort, overhaul weapons, and revamp maps, assets, and textures.

The mod team says improving the game will be an ongoing endeavor given the scale of the project and that improvements will be made gradually to make HalfLife 2: VR the “best VR experience” possible.

For instance, the mod team intends to introduce the two add-on episodes to virtual reality. Most of the expansions are already playable, according to the team.

After launching the open beta, the team also wants to explore full VR support for Episodes One and Two.

The weapons in the game, for instance, could use some fine-tuning. There is no support for hand poses in most gadgets and some of the animations are either incomplete or missing. The team says it is working on these and will release updates gradually as it completes them.

The mod team also wants to improve on the locomotion and controls. The developers want to support teleportation and other comfort options for vehicles.

Other areas the team is working on include revising the 3D models and textures using AI upscaling. The team wants these improvements to remain true to the original game. They are also planning to overhaul the maps, give them better lighting, and more details as well as VR optimizations.

The HalfLife 2: VR game will be free. However, you must have a Steam installation of the original game.
