Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is reporting that Apple is building three headsets with a ‘Reality Pro’ headset set to be launched in 2023.

In his PowerOn newsletter, Gurman is providing lots of new information about Apple’s upcoming virtual reality headset although he posts that he doesn’t expect any major announcement about this product category to be made this week.

Gurman writes that Apple is building three new headsets that are codenamed N301, N602, and N421 and that the first headset that Apple will launch is named Apple Reality Pro.

The Apple Reality Pro is a Mixed Reality headset that will likely be Apple’s “high-end rival to Meta’s upcoming Quest Pro” according to the Bloomberg report.

Gurman writes that Apple was debating calling the headset Apple Reality or Apple Vision in January this year and that Apple has finally settled on the Apple Reality name.

The Apple Reality headset has reportedly been under development for several years and blends virtual reality and augmented reality experiences. The headset will be launched in January 2023 with a lighter-weight AR-only version set to be launched a few years later.

Last week, an Apple-linked shell company filed trademarks for “Reality” names in multiple countries. Some of these trademarks could be for future Apple headsets.

The report says the model codenamed N602 will be the successor to Apple’s first headset model although it might have a lower price than the first version.

In July this year, renowned Apple and XR hardware analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported on the second-generation Apple Mixed Reality headset in his personal blog.

Kuo wrote that Apple was already in talks with its suppliers as it worked on the second-generation AR/VR headset. The headset would come in different models and the first model would be an upgrade of Apple’s first-generation headset and will feature better hardware. Kuo also reported that the other Apple model would be more affordable.

In the report, Kuo stated that the complexity and the high-end hardware in Apple’s second-generation headset meant that the device will likely be priced too high. Apple would then follow it up with a less expensive model that targets a wider user base. The move would be similar to what Apple currently does with the entry-level models of its iPhone and iPad.

There is also the N421 model. Gurman describes this model as fulfilling “Apple’s long-held dream of augmented reality glasses.” However, he notes that this device will not be launched any time soon.

Rumors have been hovering for quite some time that Apple is working on a new product line. It is now apparent that the company has been working on the AR/VR product category.
