Ramiro Cardenas, a video game streamer based in Mexico, has shared images of the Meta Quest Pro headset which he claims he bumped into inside a hotel room. Cardenas shared images of what looks like Meta’s upcoming Project Cambria headset that the company has been teasing for the past year or so and which will be launched next month.

The photos and videos leaked by Cardenas show that the new virtual reality headset has three additional cameras on the front part of the headset, unlike the current consumer-grade Meta Quest 2 headset. The headset’s controllers also spot a new look and do not have the open circle design seen in the current model.

In the video, Cardenas can be seen unboxing the device from its packaging to reveal a black virtual reality headset along with a controller with an updated design.

The headset features three cameras on the front part but the controller is lacking the characteristic hollowed-out loop design housing the sensors in the existing controllers. Instead, the controllers in the leaked footage have a more solid design.

The packaging spots a “Meta Quest Pro” label which has been stamped on its top-left corner. There is also a graphic with the virtual reality headset and controllers.

In his footage, Cardenas gives a closeup view of the label on the box which is stamped “Not for resale – engineering sample.” According to Cardenas, the person who had stayed in the room and presumably left their headset there has since claimed it.

The images are coming out a month before the Meta Connect event which takes place virtually on October 11th. Zuckerberg had promised to reveal the headset around that time.

Cardenas initially posted images of the headset via a comment section in a Facebook post on the Oculus Quest 2 Facebook group, stating that multiple devices had been left behind in the room.

While the story sounds fantastic, sources are reporting that the “discovery” might not have been accidental. There have been other precedents where new devices that are soon to be launched are conveniently “forgotten” somewhere public. In 2010, an iPhone 4 prototype was found in a bar and recently, an unreleased Pixel 7 was sold on eBay. There is also the Pixel Watch prototype that apparently got lost in a restaurant.

Bloomberg was the first to report on the Quest Pro name after a developer found a reference to the name in a Meta code. It is thus, almost certain, that the new device will be referred to as Meta Quest Pro.

This summer, Zuckerberg posted a demo that showed the Quest Pro will have mixed reality functions via a color passthrough. The current Meta Quest 2 has a greyscale passthrough functionality that allows the wearer to see their real-world, physical surroundings while wearing the headset. The Quest Pro, in contrast, will feature a full-color passthrough mode that will more realistically render the real-world surroundings. The headset also has depth sensors which enable you to accurately place objects in the physical space for mixed reality functions.
