Pico accidentally shared a new promotional image of its upcoming Pico 4 headset on Twitter.

The image is a render of the headset along with its controllers. The post was later deleted suggesting it might have been shared accidentally, rather than as a cheeky early leak ahead of the headset’s release.

A Pico official described the image shared in the post as a “test”. It is therefore possible this might a genuine image of Pico’s upcoming headset.

The virtual reality headset shown in the deleted Pico post is very slim, as expected, and has almost the same form factor as the Meta Quest Pro. It seems like it is also very compact. The form factor of the Pico 4 headset has been realized thanks to the flat pancake lenses.

Pico has also shown the first trailer which features some of the most popular virtual reality games and fitness apps. The trailer does not show the device.

The Pico 4 headset will be unveiled earlier than previously anticipated and is aiming for the Western markets. The device is set to be unveiled on September 22 at 14:00GMT+2.  You can watch a presentation of the headset via TikTok or YouTube.

The Pico 4 headset is already listed in the Chinese online store Taobao. Prospective buyers can reserve it in the store for approximately $15.

In the Taobao store, the headset is priced at 9999 Yuan which is equivalent to roughly $1500. However, this is likely only a placeholder price and the actual price will be announced when the headset launches on September 22.

A Chinese analyst has claimed that the Pico 4 headset will be launched in September worldwide and the pricing will be aggressive to enable the ByteDance VR hardware company to compete with Meta’s hardware lineup.

The Pico 4 headset will come in two memory variants and will also include accessories. The entry in the Taobao online store showed that the headset will be available in 128GB and 256GB storage options. Meta is also providing the Quest 2 headset with the same storage options. A preview of the Pico 4 accessories shows these include a Facepad and a carrying case.

The images released seen so far in FCC filings also indicate the parts of the headset design such as its built-in pancake lenses which will give the Pico 4 headset a slimmer form factor. This has been confirmed by leaked design concepts of the headset. The controllers have also been redesigned entirely.

The Pico 4 Pro

Pico boasts that its Pico 4 headset is a “new flagship” and also an “all-in-one machine” that is a consumer product.

However, FCC filings show that Pico will launch two new virtual reality headsets simultaneously namely, the Pico 4 and the Pico 4 Pro.

The Pico 4 Pro headset reportedly has extra face-tracking and eye-tracking functionalities. However, the listing on the Taobao online store does not mention the Pico 4 Pro headset.

Pico might wait until Meta unveils its upcoming Meta Quest Pro (Project Cambria) headset on October 11 before it reveals details of the Pico 4 Pro headset including its pricing.

For VR hardware enthusiasts, the next four weeks will be a beehive of activity and new product launches.
