Marriott & VR

For ages, everyone has been waiting for Oculus Rift to unveil their final headsets for the general public. But sadly, for those who lack insider connections to the technology world, this doesn’t seem possible any time soon; which is why the opportunity offered by the Marriott Hotels chain to try the new Oculus Rift headset is all the more exciting.

Marriott Hotels have offered a chance to experience the amazing world of virtual reality in downtown San Francisco. They have generously kept this option available for free for interested fans. As a promotional campaign, Marriott Hotels constructed a sort of ‘teleporter’ that offered to take visitors on a virtual tour of a black sand beach in the breathtakingly beautiful island of Maui. The beach is officially known by the name of ‘Oneuli Beach’. The multi-sensory virtual excursion also included a glimpse of downtown London – specifically a skyscraper. The entire tour takes about 90 seconds to get through.

The hotel very cleverly had the booths set up to resemble a transporter platform from the insanely popular movie Star Trek. Top marks for the pop culture reference, I’d say. The Oculus Rift headsets are handed out to visitors for their virtual tour through Hawaii and London. Headphones are also distributed so users can get a fully loaded sensory experience and another fun part the hotel added was that while on the beach, smartly concealed fans blew warm air on the visitors’ bodies to simulate tropical beach breezes. To add even greater authenticity, heat lamps were installed in the booths to imitate the warmth of sunshine available on the beach and the ocean’s aroma was gently sprayed in the air. Risking slight risk of motion sickness, even the floor of the booth tilts a little bit to add to the overall illusion of walking on the sand.

This is a brilliantly executed example of a promotional campaign that gives a mini “vacation” to whoever wants to visit the booths. Marriott Hotels has done an outstanding job in both advertising their own hospitality chain and whetting appetites of technology fans about the upcoming Oculus Rift headset. Granted, the two virtual tours aren’t nearly enough to give a full feel of virtual reality but in this constricted time bubble, the hotel chain has really pulled out all the stops with the overall sensory experience. Virtual Reality Times will closely follow the progress of Oculus Rift, VR related campaigns by Marriott Hotels and update you about any new details, as soon as they are released!
