EvilMech Runner

There are rumors circling the technology world that certain virtual reality headsets will be available in the consumer market by the nest two months. This rumor has yet to be certified but is already causing frenzy within fans of the Oculus Rift and Gear headsets.

Despite the amazing progress being achieved with reference to virtual reality and video games, an input solution still has not been agreed upon for gaming. The developing team of Oculus Rift Virtual Reality has claimed to be working on a software that picks up human movement while going through the virtual reality experience. The goal is to duplicate innate human movement while experiencing the VR environment but if they have achieved their target, there is no news to support that assumption.

Surprisingly, an indie developer by the name of Filipp Keks has been successful in achieving this solution in part. He has recently launched a new virtual reality video game which used just the Oculus Rift headset to register human movement. This game has been released by the name of “EvilMech Runner”, a game designed to be played in the first person. EvilMech Runner carries support for the second development kit (DK2) created by Oculus Rift.

The purpose of the game is to avoid capture by a mech that chases after the player throughout the game. The fun part is, EvilMech Runner does not require a regular gamepad to be operated; instead, it uses only the Oculus Rift headset. The movements of the player are fed into the headset and are received as input by the game. Players are asked to stand with the DK2 camera positioned directly in front of them, a coupe meters away. If the player takes even a small step in any direction, it is mimicked by his or her avatar inside the EvilMech Runner. A tracker range has been set and mapped out so players know where to step to keep giving the game feedback about their movements.

The developers of EvilMech Runner have suggested that players use a tripod to position the camera, so as to play comfortably. Players can make their avatars jog by jogging in place themselves and are even able to crouch under certain objects. At one specific point in the game, the mech stops chasing the player. EvilMech Runner is available for download on the Oculus Share website and is compatible with both Mac and PC. Virtual Reality Times will continue to follow progress being made with reference to EvilMech Runner and report with any further updates.
