Lucasfilm and Magic Leap Tie Knot For Star Wars AR Experiences
Thanks to a new partnership between the ever-secretive Magic Leap and Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB, you can bring the entire Star Wars experience into your living room. This partnership will see Magic Leap’s futuristic yet secretive augmented reality technology to Lucasfilm’s most advanced creative studio lab, ILMxLAB.
Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB was formed last year targeted at creating immersive experiences based on virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality platforms. And this studio is about to create the Star Wars AR experience enabled by Magic Leap’s widely discussed yet unrevealed AR technology.
Neither Lucasfilm nor Magic Leap has said a word about specific things to expect, or even about the availability of Magic Leap’s technology to the mainstream. Where Magic Leap emphasizes is on having this specific technology to blend the popular Star Wars characters into your own living space. Not just being augmented into some holographic sheet or plane, but the experience floats within the user’s own physical space.
To make this Star Wars AR experience possible, the partnership will set up a “semi-secret” joint lab in ILM’s Presidio, San Francisco command center. This lab will be housing several programmers and researchers from Lucasfilm and Magic Leap, and the team will be in charge of building these experiences from the ground up.
Magic Leap and Lucasfilm are still working behind the curtains for the joint secretive lab, with meetings held every day.
While Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz still won’t give a hint of when we’ll see any hard product from them, he said that they are testing out their production facilities to benchmark their manufacturing capabilities.
