Music as a Cure for Visually Induced Motion Sickness

A group of researchers at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute tried to find out if music was actually capable of reducing the symptoms of VR sickness, also known as Visually Induced Motion Sickness or VIMS. The team recruited 93 people who experienced a difficult bicycle ride in virtual reality. They were split into groups, some of them were hearing music and the others not. Turns out that people who listened to music during the ride felt better than those who didn’t, but only if they actually liked the music.

So, it shouldn’t be just random music but music that you find pleasant in order to reduce your VR sickness symptoms. This music solution is not even new, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that listening to music can help you prevent motion sickness without needing medications. There is also a study that claims that nausea is reduced in those patients that listen to music during chemotherapy. Maybe music works as a distraction for the mind or perhaps it makes your organism level somehow. But, in any case, we are glad we have many solutions for VR Sickness and that music is one of them.
