During Facebook’s F8 developer’s conference, Michael Abrash, Oculus’ chief scientist, took the stage to discuss augmented reality and its humbling evolution. Even though Virtual Reality is gaining a lot of popularity, Abrash claims that full AR may take about 5-10 years more to gain momentum.

Michael Abrash Sees a Bright Future for AR

There is a plenty amount of new AR features both in video games and other useful or fun applications, there are also  AR headsets in development, but how can we define a full AR experience? According to Abrash, Augmented Reality glasses must enhance people’s vision and hearing impeccably, they have to make people smarter and more capable, make them feel comfortable, with plenty of stylism, and they also need to be power efficient, and socially acceptable, so you can incorporate these glasses into your life.

“Full AR will not be an occasional or special case device. It will be your always-on helper continually aware of your surroundings, your context, and your history. Constantly mixing the real and virtual worlds to serve your needs and keep you connected.” Said Abrash.

Abrash claims that we also require pieces of technology that are still beyond our reach. We need better improvements on UX, system design, artificial intelligence computer vision, audio, displays and maybe others that we don’t know.  The industry needs to develop these technologies and make them affordable.

So there is still much left to be done, but Augmented Reality has quite the potential to become a revolutionary technology. “I predict that AR will involve the greatest leap in the nature of human/computer interactions since the mouse and GUI.” Says Abrash.
