It’s no secret that the high cost of VR-ready PCs is the main obstacle for Virtual Reality adoption among technology consumers but this is about to change soon.

CLOUD VR

Chinese Cloud VR Service Replaces VR-Ready PCs

Even though HTC and Oculus slashed the prices of their Virtual Reality kits to $599 and $499 respectively, they are still expensive for the majority of the population, especially considering that you also need an $800 PC to be able to run most VR applications with decent performance. But Chinese consumers may no longer need to worry about this part of the deal.

HTC announced a curious partnership with Beijing Cyber Cloud and Dalian Television to launch what would be the world’s first cloud service for Virtual Reality. It is set to be a commercial trial in the city of Dalian, which is not far from the North Korean border. The whole idea of the system is to replace the PC with a set-top box with a 60Mbps broadband connection that features access to Virtual Reality content from HTC’s Viveport.

Besides the obvious monetary savings, the system brings other benefits, by having VR content in the cloud, users won’t need to deal with updates, drivers, downloads and such nuisances. Reports indicate that the new service will be available for those willing to pay a 3,000 yuan deposit (about $450) plus a monthly fee of only 500 yuan (about $75).and this includes an HTC Vive headset. By paying 6688 yuan (about $1000) consumers can get full ownership of the Vive headset and a one-year subscription to the service.

There are downsides to this innovative service, such as some minimal added latency and probably connectivity issues. So you will definitely need the best internet connection possible or else you will end with a useless VR system.
