Epson, the manufacturer of the Moverio AR smart glasses has announced the launch of the Epson Drone Soar AR app that will allow users to pilot drones using the platform’s augmented reality glasses.

The app has just been released today and allows drone pilots to easily navigate the skies through their glasses while maintaining the drone in full view. This makes it much easier for users to navigate their drones as they can see the drone through their AR glasses while at the same time keeping an eye on the heads-up display of their glasses.

The Epson Drone Soar AR app is a fully-featured augmented reality app for by DJI drones enthusiasts that are using Epson’s Moverio AR smart glasses platform. Drone pilots can get even more impressive AR experiences that include flight telemetry data, video feed monitoring as well as a host of rich augmented reality content.

The drone was designed by YML, a Silicon Valley creative agency, for Epson Moverio BT-300 AR glasses in collaboration with the drone manufacturer DJI. The app has lots of easy to use features that provide users with seamless flight features. Not only does it improve the pre-flight visualization but you will also get real-time flight assistance as well as a post-flight visualization experience. The enhanced experiences will not only boost the safety but also the capability and productivity of the DJI drones for both professionals and hobbyists.

Using the Epson Drone Soar app, drone pilots can get heads-up and hands-free experience when using Epson Moverio BT-300FPV Drone Edition AR glasses. The app provides pilots with impressive AR features such as important telemetry data while still allowing them to maintain the line of sight of their drones. This data is also displayed directly in front of the viewer so they don’t have to constantly look at their mobile device while piloting the drain. This allows for a very seamless drone flight experience.

The app offers a vast improvement in drone flying performance. Drones such as the DJI require users to insert a smartphone into the controller and then constantly look down on the smartphone screen to see the drone’s camera view and also look up to get a sense of the direction the drone is flying in. On a practical level, this makes it hard to fly the drone on course or maneuver it accurately.

If you are flying the drone and there is bright light outside, you won’t even be able to clearly see the contents of the smartphone screen due to the glare. The Moverio smart glasses somewhat minimize the sunshades but when used with the Epson app, you will be able to clearly see where exactly you are flying to.

The user interface also works perfectly for drone pilots. They are fed with accurate flight data in real-time that helps them with the drone navigation. The drone pilot can adjust the brightness, camera settings and shutter settings. It also allows you to toggle between the first person mode and the transparent mode without releasing the drone controller.  While wearing the smart glasses, users can also switch on the head tracking to move and point the drone camera in a particular direction. Letting go of the button will lock the camera into position.

To provide users with an optimal flying experience, the app is equipped with the following features:-

  • Downloadable map: Users can download certain regions in the map for offline use.
  • The Pre-Flight Status Check: Notifies the drone pilot on any flight restrictions that need to be taken care off before they take off.
  • Drone Connect: Gives users easily accessible view of the various vital functions of the drone such as the battery, flight status, altitude, the HD mode and much more.
  • Smart mode: There are ten flight modes that users can choose and switch in between to get the desired flight experience.
  • The in-flight camera setting editing: Makes it possible for users to edit the drone’s camera settings when they are in flight or while it is connected to pick optimal settings for ideal shooting conditions.

The Epson Soar app is the second augmented reality app that has been developed by YML in collaboration with DJI. The app is already available in the Moverio Apps market. Users who wish to try it out can visit the any of the DJI authorized stores and other local drone retailers stocking the DJI models.

The Epson Moverio AR smart glasses have been around for the past 7 years. Along the way, the company began focusing on the drone market as one of its most viable use-cases for its AR smart glasses.
