The open broadcasting software Streamlabs is growing by leaps and bounds into an indispensable tool for live streaming content. Today, in its bid to improve viewer and streamer interaction, the company has partnered with Twitch to launch a new AR extension for Twitch called Face Masks that allows content creators to apply animated 3D expressions on their faces in real-time to entertain viewers.

The simple plugin uses augmented reality and users can apply the animated expressions as part of a channel subscription or Bits donation. The Face Masks is a Twitch Extension which enables streamers to create emotes from animated 3D models which will act as AR overlays on the streamers. It creates emoji-like expressions that entertain viewers while also acting as perks or tokens for the channel subscribers. This is one of the many improvements that Streamlabs is putting in place facilitate the easy monetization of audiences for the streamers.

The Face Masks Twitch Extension is in the beta phase and gives users and streamers access to 26 exclusive augmented reality facemasks as well as new perks for the channel subscribers thereby transforming Twitch’s popular emotes into animated 3D models. Viewers can apply these animated expressions to a streamer’s face in real-time after buying a subscription.

The Face Masks provide new ways that streamers can use to not only interact with their audiences but also monetize their channels. Twitch is a live streaming platform that provides a good foundation for growth for both streamers and the industry. The new Face Masks Extension provides new ways through which the platform can add more value to creators and their communities.

The Streamlabs Face Masks Extensions debuted in December 2018. This was an update to the Streamlabs OBS which helped bolster user engagement. The impact was impressive as the update saw donations go up by as much as 30% during its initial testing. With the transformation of the feature into a live Twitch extension, both Affiliates and Partners will now be able to customize their channels by using programmable interactive overlays and panels that are geared at enticing both Tier Two and Tier Three subscribers.

The new update also allows viewers to use a virtual good on Twitch called Bits which will enable the audience to have an engagement through celebrations and cheering. It also allows for interactions with streamers and Face Masks even if the user is yet to subscribe to a stream.

The new updates bring about expanded integration and build on the earlier success that was seen with the Face Masks broadcasting tool for donations. An estimated 30% of streamers have been able to double their donation revenues since the Face Masks Twitch Extension was launched in December 2018.

The Twitch Extensions refer to a collection of live apps that Twitch creators can use to customize the pages of their channels using programmable and interactive panels or overlays. The Face Masks extension will unlock new perks and utility for audience members in multiple Tiers of Twitch subscriptions.

The Face Masks Extension also brings new opportunities for streamers to offer more value and reward to their community of subscribers by being more entertaining and engaging. This enhanced value could also be an important revenue driver.

After the installation of the Face Masks Twitch Extension, viewers will be able to apply an exclusive Twitch Face Mask through various techniques:-

  • Join a Tier Two or Tier Three subscription: These subscriptions will unlock a total of 24 Face Masks (12 Face Masks for each tier). The viewers will able to apply a Face Mask when they make the first subscription, when they resubscribe or when they use Bits.
  • Use the Bits: Both the Tier Two and Tier Three subscribers will gain access to all the Face Masks that have been unlocked from their subscription for the entire subscription duration. All users, irrespective of their subscription status, will get access to two Twitch-exclusive Face Masks whenever they send bits. One of the masks will be freely available to viewers regardless of whether they’ll be sending Bits via the extension or making donations via the streamers Face Mask donations page.

Twitch expects its partnership with Streamlabs to create unique avenues through which its streamers’ most dedicated fans can have a role in creating the moments. The Face Masks extension will only be available to those streamers that make use of the Streamlabs OBS.

Here is a quick overview of the steps that a Twitch Affiliate or Partner can follow to opt into Face Masks:-
