Newly launched Facebook headset Oculus Quest will soon get a second browser. In a statement to Variety, a Mozilla spokesperson has stated that the nonprofit has been working on a Firefox Reality VR browser version for Oculus Quest.

Mozilla was one of the brands included in the Oculus Quest early access program and the nonprofit has now developed and tested a Firefox Reality browser which is ready for release, hopefully within the next month. Mozilla’s social VR platform which is known as Hubs is already available on the Oculus Quest headset through the Oculus browser.

The Firefox Reality browser for mobile VR headsets was first announced last April. Mozilla then proceeded to release the Firefox Reality versions for the Oculus Go headset and the Google Daydream virtual reality platform last September. In January this year, Mozilla had also announced its partnership with HTC aimed at bringing Firefox Reality to the high-end virtual reality headsets such as the HTC Vive. Then in the subsequent month, the nonprofit launched a Firefox Reality version for the HoloLens 2 Augmented Reality headset.

Apart from developing a dedicated virtual reality browser, Mozilla has also been a driving force behind the WebVR open specification that enables users to experience virtual reality in their browsers thereby enabling developers to build immersive web applications for virtual reality headsets.

Currently, with the Firefox Reality version for Quest, developers will now be able to build web-based VR experiences for Quest without having to wait for Oculus/Facebook approval. This will help many to short-circuit the current stringent Facebook approvals process for experiences allowed on its Oculus headsets. Many developers trying to publish on the Quest have been getting rejection letters due to Facebook’s stringent and selective approach:
