IKEA Place Augmented Reality App Expanded to Let User Fill Whole Room with Virtual Furniture
The IKEA Place app for iOS was quite a marvel as far as the functional use of augmented reality technology goes. It inspired an avalanche of similar shopping apps that deploy augmented reality to assist users in shopping for items by first allowing them to visualize the products and virtually overlay them in their real world settings to assess their suitability before they even visit the store physically and make a purchase.
Today, IKEA has just given its Place app a major upgrade with a new interface, improvements in curation as well as the ability to now view the entire room in AR instead of just focusing on a particular section where the virtual furniture has been overlaid.
The IKEA Place app leverages Apple’s powerful ARKit platform to deliver these features. Among the features rolled out in today’s update is multiplacement which enables app users to try out multiple items at once and use augmented reality to visualize the items in their rooms.
The update also includes a new sets feature which enables users to map out entire rooms using new furniture and see how these would look in their spaces. You can even decide to redesign an entire room with new furniture and the app will enable you to have a better look at the room’s worth of the handpicked furniture through augmented reality.
With the update, you will also be able to point your iPhone at any piece of furniture and the IKEA Place app will provide you with suggestions on similar furniture pieces. Below is an overview of the all the new features launched in today’s update to the IKEA Place app for iOS:
- Multiplacement: The multiplacement feature lets users try out various handpicked items that look nice together.
- For You Need: This is a feed that offers users a daily stream of inspiration, product announcements and curated collections all of which can be experienced in augmented reality. The next generation of the IKEA Place app offers users lots of new items to explore and try out in their homes.
- Room Sets: With the Room Sets feature, you are able to experience all the Room Sets with just a few taps, similar to how you would experience the showrooms with IKEA. You just have to map out a space, select a theme (such as relaxing, home office and dining area) and then watch the space come magically to life. This presents the viewer with handpicked furniture which go together (harmoniously) and the user can scroll the various options in the collection easily which are available within a particular theme.
- Profile and Wishlist: This feature allows users to make a wishlist of the products tried out in augmented reality.
With these new features, IKEA is fortifying its Place app for iOS and making it more robust. The retailer is also planning to add extra new features and developments to the app in the near future. By combining the latest in augmented reality technology with the IKEA’s existing smart home solutions, the retailer now lets prospective buyers experience its products in a completely new way.
You can download the IKEA Place app for free from the iOS App Store.
