New York-based data glasses manufacturer Vuzix announced its new B2B smart glasses with waveguide displays during the CES 2020.

The new Vuzix M4000 will be the company’s new flagship product in its corporate M series. The data glasses use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR1, the same processor used in its direct predecessor the M400 and in the Google Glass 2.

What is new with these smart glasses is their new self-developed fully transparent waveguide display which has a larger field-of-view. This will bring vast advantages in work areas such as remote maintenance and production applications. The Vuzix M4000 are smaller than their immediate predecessors but overall, they are still relatively heavier considering they weigh 94 grams.

Technical Specifications of the Vuzix M4000

The technical specifications of the M4000 are otherwise similar to that of its predecessor. The M4000 also has a 12.8-megapixel camera for capturing 4K videos. It is also IP67-compliant against both water and dust and has a USB-C connection.

It has a 28-degree diagonal field-of-view and the tracking system offers three degrees of freedom. However, the data glasses still cannot provide a three-dimensional capture of the surrounding space like the HoloLens 2 and Magic Leap 1.

Vuzix has been working for years to deliver thin and practical augmented reality wearables. The company has been rolling out both consumer and enterprise solutions year after year.

The latest release, the M4000, are high-end enterprise Smart Glasses. The company described them as “the most powerful optically see-through smart glasses” for enterprise customers in the market.

The M4000 Smart Glasses are based on Qualcomm’s XR1 platform. They use waveguide display system which allows users to see augmented digital content without grappling with the occlusion of the real-world visuals. Its predecessor, the M400, is already a great augmented reality solution but Vuzix has stated that the new model has an optical see-through technology that makes it ideal for certain business applications such as remote assistance apps and critical manufacturing which require transparent and non-occluded overlays.

The M400 cost $1,800 but the M4000 while cost slightly more, at $2,500. The M4000 will be released in the second half of this year.
