The developer studio Maze Theory launched Doctor Who: The Edge of Time was released several months ago for Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR and HTC Vive. During the release, the virtual reality studio had announced that it was working on incorporating support for other virtual reality headsets including Oculus Quest. In December last year, just on the verge of Christmas, the studio had announced 23rd January as the tentative release date for support for the standalone virtual reality headset. This date has now been reconfirmed.

Maze Theory will also release a patch of the PC VR version of the game which will add support for the Valve Index virtual reality headset which has also been missing so far.

In November 2019, the game was expected to launch on all VR platforms simultaneously. Just before the release, however, the Quest version of the game had been delayed until December. The Quest versions of the virtual reality games usually launch soon after their PC VR counterparts. This is due to the additional work that has to be performed as well as the optimization required to make the games run smoothly on the standalone platforms.

In December 2019, the release date of the Quest version had been delayed once again and the release date revised to January 23rd. On a Twitter update this week, Maze Theory stated that the 23rd January release date for Oculus Quest was “still looking good”.  This is only four days from now.

Maze Theory also announced that the Quest port will be one of the best versions and will include untethered free movement as well as various other recent patch updates and improvements that the studio has made.

In a response to a Twitter user inquiry, Maze Theory confirmed that the PC VR version of the game would also get a patch that would add Valve Index support and which is likely to come about the same time as the Quest support release. Doctor Who: The Edge of Time hadn’t launched officially with Index support. However, the game still launched on Index with mixed results on how far users could get through the game when playing it on the Index headset. The new patch is expected to fix these leftover issues and to also introduce official support.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Time for Oculus Quest will support cross-buy with the Oculus Rift platform so fans won’t have to purchase the game twice.

The Edge of Time launched last year to mixed reviews. There is also another Doctor Who experience which launched the past week on SteamVR headsets and is free. Known as Doctor Who: The Runaway, it is shorter but different from the Edge of Time VR experience.
