Sony Reveals the PlayStation 5 Design
Sony has this week revealed its next-generation PlayStation 5 Console. The PS5 features a white design, a media remote, a new HD camera as well as a white DualSense controller. Sony did not divulge any specific PSVR news but the release of the new PS 5 will bolster the suggestions that the new console will support both the current and a (possibly) future PSVR hardware.
This is the first time that we are getting a peek at the design of the new console. The design looks quite slick with the white color accentuating the stylish design. Sony did the reveal via a livestream that lasted for slightly over an hour. The livestream showcased various games with the highlight being the reveal of the console’s design.
The PS 5 specifications are already well known but fans got their first glimpse of its shiny white design which is totally different from the angular black look of the previous generation console (PS4). Unlike the PS4 model, the PS5 console features a curved white shell that wraps around a black core as seen above.
The console is available in two versions. There is the standard PS5 and then there is a ‘Digital Edition’ PS5 which is clearly missing a disc drive. Presumably, the Digital Edition PS5 console will be running on games that have been digitally downloaded onto it from the PlayStation store since it does not have the capability to run or install the physical games from a disc.
The new design also features a new ‘HD Camera’. The camera in the PS4 is needed for PSVR where it is used in tracking the headset and the DS4 controller (or the Move controllers) while in Virtual Reality.
The inclusion of the new HD camera also suggests that the PS5 console will have compatibility with the current PSVR hardware. The camera might even play a role in the upcoming next-generation PSVR hardware (PSVR 2) which, according to several rumors and leaks, is also expected to be released later this year and is yet to be announced.
It isn’t clear, though, whether the HD camera included in the PS5 as seen in the reveal is a requirement for running the current generation PlayStation VR hardware with the PS5 or whether the current PS4 camera is also likely to work with the PS5, too.
In the reveal, the HD camera is presented with the PS5 but it wasn’t clear whether the camera will be bundled with all models of the console. The reveal also showed an audio headset and a media remote alongside the PS5.
The new generation console is expected launch during the 2020 holidays and it is widely expected to be compatible with the current PSVR.
