For much of 2020, the Valve Index headset has either been acutely backordered or completely out of stock. As we head into 2021, it looks like the headset is strongly returning back in stock with virtually all regions now estimating the shipment times for most kits to within two weeks.

This is the estimated shipment time for the Index packages in all the 31 regions where the headset is currently being sold.

According to the latest availability information of the headset across the regions, the ‘Full Kit’ package with all that you need to use the headset will ship within two weeks in all the regions where it is being sold. Just over a week ago, the headset was listed as out of stock in all regions apart from the US, Japan and Canada.

The ‘Base Station’ and the ‘Headset + Controllers’ packages are still out of stock in most of the regions. However, the ‘Controllers’ and ‘Headset’ packages are listed as shipping within two weeks across board.

Altogether, the current state of availability of the Valve Index headset is undoubtedly the best it has ever been in close to a year. It’s still too early in the year; let’s see whether this holds.

Like for other VR headsets and the industry in general, 2020 was bittersweet for the Valve Index headset as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Manufacturing disruptions have seen the supplies gone down even as the demand rises dramatically as a result of the lockdown and social distancing measures and the need for remote working and entertainment platforms.

For much of 2020, there was a fluctuation in the availability of the Valve Index headsets. However, there have been improvements in stock availability in the last weeks of the year and the first weeks of 2021.

In the regions where backorders have persisted, users are still able to register their interest in the various Valve Index packages. Prospective buyers can reserve a spot in line by checking out the Index store page and clicking on the order button. Valve will then send them email notifications on stock availability and afford them the opportunity to pull the trigger.

Like Valve, Oculus also grappled with stock shortages and lengthy backorders in the first half of 2020. However, Oculus has been able to keep up with the demand ever since it launched the Oculus Quest 2 headset.
