Just weeks after Tilt Brush went open source, implementations of the VR art app have emerged. The most notable was undoubtedly Multi Brush, a multiplayer Tilt Brush for Quest.

This, along with Multi Brush (and hopefully a lot more Tilt Brush implementations in the future) have come following Google’s announcement in January this year that its VR painting and drawing app Tilt Brush would be open source and would no longer officially be a Google product.
Tilt Brush is a sort of basics app for 3D design and VR art. Google’s decision to make this app open source, together with its decision to scale back its other XR projects doesn’t paint a very hopeful picture of the tech giant’s VR ambitions.
However, Tilt Brush has remained widely popular with creatives. Just days after the announcement that it was going open source, the first clones had been made by the Tilt Brush community. Silk Brush is one of those early Tilt Brush ports and it is now available in its first usable version.
Silk Brush is Sticking Close to the Model
Silk Brush was developed by the XR enthusiast Daniel Adams as a Tilt Brush port for the WebXR interface. The interface enables VR and AR apps to be used across platforms and in a matter of seconds in the browser. Users don’t need to install any separate apps to use Silk Brush.
There are a number of WebXR-enabled browsers including Google Chrome, the Oculus Brower and Mozilla’s XR browser Firefox Reality. There is no WebXR integration in iOS or Safari but Mozilla still enables use on iOS devices through the WebXR Viewer app.
Silk Brush is aiming to come as close as possible to Google’s model in terms of the app’s functionality. In the current version of Silk Brush, all the standard brushes that from Tilt Brush are available. Sketches and snapshots can also be saved, loaded and exported.
Silk Brush will undergo continuous improvement and will be expanded through updates. The developer has, however, pointed out that data loss can happen after the update so if you are a creative planning to use Silk Brush, don’t forget to back up your work.
