Oculus Brand Name Being Retired as Facebook Rebrands to Meta
With Facebook redubbing to a new corporate name –Meta-, the Oculus brand name is also being axed. Facebook Reality Labs boss Andrew “Boz” Bosworth announced the nomenclature changes via a Facebook post on Thursday, 28th October 2021.
According to Bosworth, virtual reality will offer users the most immersive route for accessing the metaverse and the company wants to ensure its flagship Quest product “is a Meta product.” The company is therefore looking to simplify its brand architecture and will be shifting from the Oculus brand in its existing as well as future hardware products.
From early 2022, the Oculus Quest VR headset will be known as “Meta Quest” while the Oculus App will be known as “Meta Quest App”. Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion seven years ago.
Bosworth stated that the company’s other hardware products will also be transitioning to the Meta brand. Facebook Portal, for instance, will now be Meta Portal.
Facebook Reality Labs will likewise change its name to simply Reality Labs with the changes to take effect both internally and externally in “the next few weeks and months.”
The first-party social experiences will also be moving away from the Oculus brand. The company is also expanding Meta Horizon as the brand which will be encompassing all of the company’s first-party immersive social experiences. This has already been implemented with Horizon Workrooms and Horizon World. Soon, this will shift to Horizon Venues, Horizon Home, Horizon Profile, and Horizon Friends.
‘Horizon Profile’ is a new profile type that we are hearing for the first time. There are no details yet but the company’s plans for a Horizon-branded profile could tie in with news that it is also working on “more options” for Quest login without a Facebook account, which is a step back from the mandatory requirement that the company implemented last year.
According to Bosworth, as the company drops the “Facebook” brand from its name, it is planning to expand the Meta Horizon as the brand that will be encompassing all of the company‘s first-party immersive social experiences.
In his Facebook post, Bosworth also acknowledged that the company’s upcoming Quest login change is one of its “highest priority areas of work internally.”
As it moves forward with its plans, Meta Reality Labs is also developing “new ways to log into Quest” that will not have the Facebook account requirement and that this will likely land “sometime next year.”
