Halloween is just around the corner and that means haunted houses, costume parties, or even some Halloween movie marathon with friends. However, if you are looking for some really spooky and hair-rising experience that will drive the chills right down the spine, you might as well immerse yourself in some virtual reality horror games.

Depending on the headset and the mechanics of the game, the VR medium can drive the horror to a whole new level and immerse you into a heart-stopping spooky experience worthy of a Halloween night. Warning! Some of these games aren’t for the faint-hearted.

In this article, we have selected the 10 best VR horror games guaranteed to drive the shivers down your spine this Halloween. Some of these games are platform-exclusive while others support the spectrum of the major virtual reality headsets. Let’s have a look: –

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Platform: PSVR

This platform exclusive is one of the most-polished VR experiences you will ever immerse yourself into. Rather than running and gunning like in RE4, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is a full-blown horror experience with a lot of story to the experience as well as plenty of atmospheric horrors as you head into the Baker House Mansion. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is almost five years old but if you haven’t tried it on VR, do it this Halloween for an unbeatable horror experience. On the VR side of things, the experience fully takes advantage of the medium, including the virtual reality controllers, and is as flawless as a gamepad-based title. But the magic is in how it brings to life the horror theme to scare the hell out of you. This is hands down one of the best if not the best VR horror game that you can play this Halloween.

Resident Evil 4 VR

Platform: Quest

Exclusive to Quest, Resident Evil 4 isn’t as terrifying as Resident Evil 7 Biohazard but it is definitely the best title in the series. You will encounter lots of terrifying moments in this title, too. RE4 is not a native virtual reality experience but it has a first-person viewpoint that works well and the game has also been fine-tuned to create a viscerally immersive VR horror experience as you go on a 15-hour zombie-slaying adventure. The VR port of the game was thoughtfully done and features full motion control support. The systems have been comprehensively reworked and the visuals have undergone a considerable upgrade over the original.  In the VR version of Resident Evil 4, you will still experience the nerve-wracking intensity of the original RE4. Although the port still has some rough edges, it is a wonderful way to re-experience the original, especially in a VR medium.

Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted

Platforms: Quest, PSVR, PC VR

Five Nights at Freddy’s VR is a popular title in the VR horror genre. Launched in May 2019, FNAF consists of a collection of classic and original games that occur in the Five Nights universe. In spite of this being a mini-series, the games have been well-paced so don’t worry about jumping or screaming in horror and anxiety. Still, this is a true VR horror game and you will need nerves steel to go through its paces. In FNAF, you are thrown in as a caretaker in a chain of pizzerias not too dissimilar from the Chuck E. Cheese restaurants, where animatronic characters spring to life after hours to hunt you. You must struggle to stay alive amidst all this which is no mean feat. Even with steely nerves, this VR horror game will give you the chills.

Phasmaphobia

Platform: PC VR

Phasmophobia is one of the scariest games around. It is just as scary in virtual reality. This is a four-player online terror with randomized bone-chilling scares. The game is a co-op psychological horror where you and your team will be deploying ghost-hunting equipment to investigate and collect as much evidence as possible on some paranormal activity that is apparently on the rise. Phasmophobia is darn scary so brace yourself for some spine-chilling ordeal on your Halloween night.

The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners

Platforms: Quest, PSVR, PC VR

This is one of the best titles to have come out of the Walking Dead universe. If you love zombie shooters, then you will enjoy this game with its insanely gory combat system as well as some genuinely scary and shocking moments. The beauty with The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners is that every challenge that you undertake and any decision that you make will be entirely driven by you. You will be fighting the undead, making some gut-wrenching choices either for yourself or your co-survivors, or scavenging through the ruins of New Orleans. Definitely not for the faint-hearted.

The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners is currently part of the Steam Halloween sale so hurry up and save 15% on your purchase.

Lies Beneath

Platforms: Oculus Quest, Rift

Lies Beneath is a single-player survival horror game set in the Alaskan town of Slumber where something has gone horribly wrong. This is a graphic and survival-inspired VR title where you will immerse yourself into the levels trying to delve into the psyche of its protagonist, Mae. You will acquire a full arsenal of weapons as you go head-on against various monsters, all of whom are pulling all stops to stop you as go on your quest for salvation.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

Platform: PSVR

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is an old-school arcade shooter where you will strap yourself into one of the most terrifying rollercoasters ever in which no two rides are ever the same. This VR title is from the same warped minds who weaved the PS4 horror classic Until Dawn. This epic virtual reality horror experience is perfect for you if you are a trigger-happy arcade shooter enthusiast. You will arm yourself to the teeth and descend into the madness of blasting your way through hordes of monsters and enemies who will be coming at you from all directions and angles. You must duck and dodge all that’s thrown at you in your disturbing rollercoaster ride. The game takes you through seven levels of pure terror as you work way through to the global leaderboards. Don’t try this if you have a weak heart. It is a PSVR-exclusive. Grab it today for a memorable Halloween night.

Half-Life: Alyx

Platform: SteamVR

Here is another platform-exclusive that has been highly popular and is credited with ramping up Valve Index sales when it was released last year. This isn’t really the classic horror game but it features some tense atmospheric and terrifying moments to warrant its inclusion in the horror genre. In Alyx, you are immersed into a quarantined zone in an impossible fight against the brutal occupation by a race of alien invaders called the Combine. The game costs $60 but watch out for some Halloween sale.

The Exorcist: Legion VR

Platforms: Quest, PSVR, PC VR

The Exorcist: Legion VR is an episodic virtual reality experience and probably one of the scariest you will ever try out. Each episode in the title has a demonic entity that will torment you to no end to test both your courage and resolve. This is extremely horrifying and we certainly won’t recommend it for the weak-kneed.

The port to VR has been nicely done although the graphics are a bit paired down. In The Exorcist: Legion VR, you will be assuming the role of a paranormal investigator trying to find answers after recent strange happenings that first began in a large chapel. The game takes you through several episodes before culminating into a final set-piece moment, a climax that might pass for a Hollywood horror blockbuster.
