Meta Acquires Quest Exclusive VR Fitness App ‘Supernatural’ Creator
Supernatural creator to work under the recently renamed Meta’s Reality Labs, formerly Oculus Reality Labs.
When Facebook rebranded itself to Meta, it made it quite clear that it is focusing its efforts on the metaverse. The company’s latest acquisition also appears geared towards that effort. According to Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content Jason Rubin, the company has acquired the creator of the immersive VR workout app for Quest headsets Supernatural, Within.
Within launched Supernatural in 2020 exclusively for the Oculus Quest headset. At face value, Supernatural is just like any other Beat Saber, Dance Dance Revolution, or any other rhythm game but in creating the game, Within leveraged Quest’s wireless features with a bigger library of music that supports moving in 360 degrees to the songs. You can also access high-adrenaline calorie-burning workouts that are available on a subscription basis and which are partially spearheaded by supportive coaches that provide commentary on your ears. In the coaching staff is Head of Fitness Leanne Pedante who has since grown into a virtual reality celebrity of sorts in the fast-growing Supernatural Facebook group where players make support and fitness journey posts.
Within CEO Chris Milk and its Head of Fitness, Leanne Pedante have, in another announcement, stated that the platform’s coaches, managers, and choreographers will still be part of the team. They will be working on Supernatural virtual reality fitness experiences independently under Meta’s Reality Labs. Within will still be answering to its new parent company moving forward but according to Milk’s and Pedante’s statements, the acquisition will give Within team access to a lot more resources including more music, additional features as well as more social experiences.
In Supernatural, the player has to hit colored orbs flying at them from the game’s various VR environments using their VR controllers. If you hit the balls with sufficient force, they shatter otherwise they will only float away if the force isn’t enough. Based on your performance, you will be scored at the end of the game.
There is a 30-day free trial period in Supernatural after which the title has a subscription of $19 per month.
