Virtual reality fitness service FitXR is making some adjustments following a negative backlash on its shift to a subscription-based model. The service is releasing a past DLC for free and providing free classes.

FitXR was rebranded from BoxVR in 2020 and subsequently introduced a monthly subscription plan along Meta’s support for the service on Quest in April 2021. Upon the rebrand, FitXR became free to download and also charged $9.99 for features such as its daily workouts as well as new exercise types like its recently launched HIIT routines.

Incoming FitXR Changes

Many fans were, however, hugely disappointed with the monthly subscription option which got rid of the existing structure of premium DLC drops even though it maintained access for the existing content that users had purchased and got a three-month trial of the subscription. Following the move to introduce the subscription, the app’s user ratings dropped to 3 stars on the Oculus Store with many of the reviewers citing that they were locked out of the majority of the app’s features.

FitXR CEO Sam Cole blasted an email to customers acknowledging that FitXR’s user experience was not working with many customers and that its DLC packs were an important part of the user experience for most users.

The email expresses regrets that FitXR had not been able to get user feedback originally and that the company has learned from its mistakes even though if it cannot undo them. Moving forward, Cole stated users will be involved on the decision-making on any updates to the app and that the user feedback would shape FitXR’s future.

To address the backlash, Cole also stated that the update that went live last week would change the ‘Legacy’ UI to enable existing customers to only view the content which they had access to and be not locked out from the workouts that prompt users to subscribe.

FitXR will also be releasing all the previous DLC packs free of charge in the course of next week. The company also announced that it is committing to a free and full-length class for all users once every month.

However, the app’s subscription model stays.
